Jean-François Riffaud trained as a visual artist and graduated from the Rouen School of Fine Arts, where he created installations and performances. For ten years, he played in alternative networks, SMACs, jazz clubs and national venues as part of various groups (Syntax Error, Electric Vocuhila, Parquet, ABACAXI, The World).

In 2020, he developed "BETEL", a minimal piece for solo electric guitar that synthesises his "plastic" vision of the musical act. Influenced as much by Tony Conrad, John Fahey, Moondog and Morton Subotnik as by the electric music of sub-Saharan Africa (Sunny Ade, Flamme Kapaya, Alick Macheso, Japanese Maladi), he uses the repetition of motifs and their "mutation" to take the listener on an initiatory experience, a sonic and mental sculpture. A video piece was made from it by video artist RAMATAUPIA.
