nome polycephale

julien boudart

Is he a storyteller, a sound ghost hunter or an oracular musician? From the plateau of Millevaches in Central France, Julien Boudart leads an exploratory practice where mythical echoes, proto-industrial rumours and organic resonances copulate. Carried to the limits of its expressive possibilities, the modular Serge unfolds ambiences full of audio-perturbative elements.

The sense of dramaturgy is palpable, proven many times over in collaborations for theatre, radio and multimedia performances. In his solo work, Julien Boudart extends it by drawing on the mixed and chaotic sources of the subconscious.

The tinkling of bronze awakes the shadows of legendary figures, in battle order for an electrified epic.

Nome polycephale, the first ep of ancient and modern myths vol.1, spreads the spirit of a bygone space-time. It is named after a lost ancient melody. Only an evocation by the poet Pindar has survived the passage of time and allows us to get an idea of it. It is said to be similar to the piercing cries of the reptilian Gorgons, once played on the aulos, a screaming double oboe with a heady song. Nome polycephales’ tracks of Julien Boudart are subtle and do not attempt to imitate the tune but rather bring out its spiritual and phantasmagorical background. It's about chaos, about opposing forces, anarchic and order-providing, which clash with equally devastating weapons.

From aerial layers to more sinister ones, we see the audible contours of a death drive. The bloody work of civilisation and the struggles that oppose it. A noisy, voiceless opera, Nome polycephale sketches out apocalyptic visions that collide past and present.

On stage, the set is deconstructed and remodelled as a ceremonial device to ward them off.
